In Honor of my Dad

My father was a WWII Air Force Veteran.20161111_093554.jpg

After the battle of Normandy, my dad along with many other military personnel were shipped overseas to France. They were considered the “clean -up crew.”

He never spoke much about his duty but this I do know.

The ocean waters made every one on board sea sick. It took weeks to get to their destination so it was a horrible situation to be in. I’ve often wondered how frightened he may have been. Did he think he would make the trip? Did he think he would come home once his time was served there if he made it across the ocean to begin with? Some died before ever reaching Normandy. Whatever his emotional state was, he never shared that with me.

Dad survived on 24 Clark Candy bars because he couldn’t eat the ship food which was as nauseating as  the rough waves.

Once they arrived on the shores of Normandy, I can only imagine what they found. I’m sure they were to find as many American soldiers as they could and bring them home.

While they were there, dad and some of his ship mates gave supplies of food to local French people who were left with nothing after such a bitter war. Many were widows and orphaned children wandering around trying to find whatever they could to get by. Maybe what dad did gave these war ravaged people some hope.

Dad served this country honorably for 2 years because the war had finally ended. He returned home and went to Erskine College, graduating in 3 years on the GI bill. His love of History was his Major.

As a result of his service, one activity dad and I shared was our trips over the years to the local library. He and I were the readers of the family and we would stock up on books to last us a few weeks at a time. He was an avid reader of History books and biographies. He would often share stories of what he had read of other wars and battles from the past.

I don’t think it coincidental that I now live a few miles from one of the largest F-16 Jet Fighter Training bases in the world. Dad’s love of aircraft was something he did talk about over the years. Now, I witness on a regular basis these very machines my dad worked on and loved, fly over my house in amazing formations. These incredible inventions are a sight to behold.

As a member of a community of Air Force/Army personnel, I am humbled and honored to be a part of their lives. Daily, I witness families watching loved ones get deployed, or moved to other bases in the US and around the world. Its a lifestyle I could never do; but then these people are heroes.

And so was my dad.shaw

Our Furry Friends: Unconditional Love

Watching the Annual American Humane Hero Dog awards the other night, I once again cried as each nominee was presented. The stories behind these brave animals are no less courageous than humans. Many risk their lives for us humans in various ways.

The Arson Dog, named “Judge” has worked more than 275 fires often bringing evidence leading to many arrests.

The Therapy dog helps the person who needs coaching in life skills.

The Police K-9 or Military Dogs are trained to find bombs, weapons or protect those in their command. “Layka” took shots and lost a leg while guarding her combat unit in Afghanistan.

There was one little dog who was what is now called a Hearing Guide dog. This precious little creature saved her human from getting hit by a bus because she can’t hear environmental sounds.

“Hooch” the French Mastiff who won has a story of his own. When found by Zach Scow 3 years ago in a rescue it was determined Hooch had had his tongue cut out. Emaciated from not being able to eat, he was rushed to a vet for treatment. He is fed by hand now.

2016-american-hero-dog-hooch

Ironically, Zach Scow almost died also from liver damage because he is a recovering alcoholic and drug addict. The two are now inseparable and Zach owes a lot of his stability to this survival of the fittest.

Hooch is now used to calm non-verbal autistic children while learning social skills. He also cares for women who have been abused. His peaceful nature is contagious; so much so that some of the first words spoken by these children of autism is “Hooch.”

How have we humans missed it?

How is it that the unconditional love and loyalty from dogs hasn’t caught on with people?

For the most part, dogs have a natural ability for qualified love. It’s not in us, and unless a dog is abused or neglected that instinct remains.

God is unconditional love.  Maybe He knew we would respond well to dogs so He placed a great deal of that love inside of them.

He also gave them the instinct to know when something is wrong. Out of the love they have for their owners, dogs respond by letting us know when to be alert, on guard or even move us out of the way of trouble we didn’t see coming.

Isn’t that how God is with us?

He is our guide.

He alerts us to danger.

He often removes us or removes that which He doesn’t want in our lives for our own protection, spiritual maturity and growth for the kingdom of God.

Psalm 27:11

Teach me your way, O LORD, And lead me in a level path because of my foes.

Dogs know automatically what their purpose is in the life they’ve been given.

Our purpose is to have and maintain a close, personal relationship with God.

Maybe we can learn from dogs how to be more obedient to our calling.

2 John 1:6 “2 John 1:6 And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.

The Hidden Agenda

If you’re like me marketing ads can really be annoying. Seems like everywhere I turn, there is one more piece of junk mail, one more disgusting commercial or a trail of internet garbage in between the article I am trying to find.

God can use anything.

As many of you know my husband and I have a Property Management company that I run. He is my partner or I like to say, “He works for me.” Ha ha.  Truthfully he has a very good full time job and I run our company from home.

At this point I have worked in some form or another in Property Management between 20-25 years. But there is nothing like being your own boss and having your own company even if the progress appears to be slow.

Living in this military city most of my clients or tenants are in some form related to this base. Not only are these heroes great to work with, it gives me the opportunity to get to know their personal convictions to the strange and sacrificial world they live in.  As I write this, the Jets are flying over our house as they practice their missions.

This base is one of the oldest installments in the Air Force and home to the largest AF Combat F-16 wing or the 20th Fighter Wing. Their mission is to provide combat ready air power and airmen for immediate challenges. It is also the home to Headquarters Ninth AF, US Air Forces Central and of late the Third Army Central. Wow. I sound so military! LOL!

Did God have anything to do with us moving here in 2007 besides my husband’s job? God’s agenda is at times hidden, but is always faithful.

About 2 weeks ago I received what appeared to be a piece of junk mail from something called nextdoor.com.  Opening it, my first reaction was, “just what I need; more social media.” For some reason I hesitated throwing it in the trash and set it on the table in the den.

A week later was when I started whining to God about getting more property. Yes, whining. And God is so good He listens even in our challenged behavior.

All of a sudden I picked up the card and found the site on the internet. It consists of finding those in your immediate neighborhood to communicate with, share with or just to get to know. You can post things like a yard sale, if your dog is missing or you want to have a bake sale for the local church.

Finding those closest to us were two other subdivisions. One is literally across the street from ours in the front. Once I added them I posted a message about our company.

This summer is what the military refers to as a “PCS” or “Permanent Change of Station.” Most personnel only remain at one base for up to 3 years at a time. These PCS’s occur during the summer so the children won’t have to be uprooted during the school year and it gives the families time to move and get settled into their new base surroundings.

I admit I was clueless to this term before moving here but now I am more inclined to understand their needs and how it fits into helping them move and finding new tenants.

Within an hour I had two inquiries; both military. I have already spoken to one and will most likely acquire their property by May and the other in the future. I believe this is the start to receiving more of His abundance.

God hadn’t forgotten me.

He didn’t purposely put me on hold to fulfill this dream.

He wasn’t punishing me by making me wait.

He was preparing us both to handle the possibilities He wants to provide.

He has been teaching us about the military culture; their needs and how to accommodate them.

He has allowed us to get more acquainted with our surroundings to do a better job.

God’s timing is perfect even when we think He is slowwwwwww…..

He is also faithful to His promises wanting to give us the desires of our Hearts as long as they match up with His.

In retrospect; I would never have imagined years ago I would ever live in a city with a military base.

I also never knew how much God would bless us for following His direction by moving to a city where we knew no one, had never been here before and to a culture we had never been exposed to.

Didn’t Abraham do that?

Genesis 12:1 “The LORD had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.”

A Call to Prayer

History is repeating itself.

The names may have changed, only the game is the same.

The goal is annihilation; only it’s more than one nation.

The evil is anti-Semitic and full of hate; we need to stop this terrible fate.

Threats and demands are the order of their day; producing fear and destruction along the way.

How long do we wait to aid our brothers and sisters in Christ?

How long do they suffer while our government ponders their plight?

We have no excuse for leaving in the first place; they need the strong arm of America’s military base.

afb

This is a call to prayer my friends; a call to God for this genocide to end.

So to those who read this, please pass it on so we can fight the enemy’s wrongs.

Ask God for his mercy; ask God for his grace so his people will repent and find peace all over the place.

2 Chronicles 7: 14 “If My people, who are called by My name, shall humble themselves, pray, seek, crave, and require of necessity My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.”

Drab and Dark Days

Such a catchy title here it makes you not want to read it?kgo-winter-storm-man-clears-snow-from-car-ap-010714-600

Haven’t we seen enough of this gloomy winter?

Haven’t we suffered enough for one season?

As we indulge the freezing temps, snow and ice in many parts of America we dream of the flowers blooming in spring and warm sunny days of summer.

WAKE UP! (we aren’t there yet)

Do we really have anything to complain about? We could have been in Australia sweating in miserably record heat during their summer.

Our dampened spirits are locked away in “cabin fever.”

Our cramped legs imagine the first walk down a sun filled street.

The bears have nothing on us humans this winter. Hibernating has made its rounds.

The weather isn’t always the reason for drab and dark days. It could be a life on the rocks of illness.
A family torn apart by divorce or the financial strain of months of no employment.

The list of “winter blues” is too long to mention.Winter Weather Georgia

So what do we make of this murky shadow from “Punxsutawney Phil?”

6 more dreadful weeks of looking at your family too much?

6 more weeks of begging the forecasters to have something better to say?

Or….6 more weeks to learn about the drowning man who is so thankful for that life jacket he was given?

What about the homeless man on the street who received a free blanket and a “suspended coffee” to keep him warm with a job offer included?

And what about our military deployed in Afghanistan who is thrilled to get that letter from home he so desperately wanted?

Seasons don’t make the difference in dark or sunny days. I know that all too well.

It is the lessons learned, the heightened gratefulness and gratitude for finding the Savior in the midst of trials too difficult to even talk about.

It is understanding the drab and dark days will eventually become sunny again with white clouds floating through the sky.

It is knowing the God of the universe has used the dark days to make us aware of “how good we got it.”

Call it training; or “boot camp” for becoming a true disciple of Jesus.

The sorrow, horror and loss of his death brought unthinkable agony before his chosen few realized on the 3rd day he literally changed the world.

We must look beyond the wretchedness of the grave.

You won’t see a groundhog’s shadow, but the silhouette of the “Almighty God” spreading his love, joy and peace throughout the drab and dark days of winter. (Psalm 91:1)

And what did God say on the first day? (Genesis 1)

“And let there be light.”

For the most part I agree with Bruce Willis. He is against gun control and infringement upon our 2nd Amendment rights. However he does not believe violence and crime in Hollywood/movies/TV should be seen as an influence. I beg to differ; I believe we are definitely influenced by what we see, hear and watch.

An Advocate for “Nihilism?”

The description of “nihilism” has been thrashed about by well-meaning but mis-guided individuals who claim to know Jesus. As we sit back and do nothing but hide behind the facades of reality, we are pinned up on a cork board of the intellects of religious modernism.

The radical idea of our freedom to bear arms is a counterfeit to our pro-life stance; this written as they protest the evils of war as if to stand unarmed defenseless.

Maybe they should borrow David’s slingshot.  Didn’t he fight against the Philistine with God’s blessing?gun control

Had Israel not continued to fight, the lineage of Jesus would not exist. It is almost an insult to God to believe otherwise.

The following blog-post caught my attention last night. And then I exploded.

http://pubtheologian.com/2012/12/17/christianity-gun-violence-the-nihilism-of-mike-huckabee/

After this theologian of modernistic behavior or whatever he claims to be blatantly called out Governor Huckabee for his stance on guns, he twisted it around other issues.

How can you believe in guns and be pro-life?

How can you justify what that madman did?

He called those of us who believe “God has been taken out of schools” had nothing to do with what the shooter did, as “nihilism.”  In other words a façade to cover up the real issues; or ignore them such as “Gun control.”

Luke 22:36 “He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.”

He seems to like that word “nihilism.” He defined the 1980 Secretary of the Interior as one for his “lack of interest in environmental concerns since Jesus is returning soon.” What?

This was the kicker. “Christians who believe in Pro-life yet glorify in the culture of death, worshipping the altar of violence and pledge allegiance to arms” and so on and so on. His words are sickening.

Iraq Air Force

He had the wrong person read that post. My fierce guardianship and protection of our Armed forces will not allow me to keep my mouth shut when one such coward spews his hate for those who gave/give him the freedom to speak!

His jugular points are nothing but notably negative deceptions; he has postmarked many Christians into a “box” full of useless paper ads. To be honest, I am not sure which side he is on.

His barrage of defilement towards Christians is somewhat questionable; especially to one who may be secular. The use of the words “many” or “refuse” or “versions” of Christianity he displays would do nothing more than confuse a non-believer.

However, it is indisputable his efforts to claim Governor Huckabee as a gun-toting, bomb throwing junkie who happens to be a Preacher on the side. I am no Preacher, but he may as well add my name to his list of Huckabee wanna bees…….as he so specifically spelled out we sanction for preemptive wars, and remain quiet as we drop  bombs on innocent people.2nd amendment

To ease my infuriated soul while writing him a nasty reply, I cordially and “largely” invited him to come to our Air Force base. Spelling out the necessities of our heroes who have and do fight daily for him to spew his anti-military hate, I advised him we do live behind a bomb site. I thought he needed to be aware that I have confiscated some of those unused bombs to do just as he said; drop on innocent heads…I won’t say it.

As an addition to my speech to Mr. Snider I made it clear how safe I feel living here. I can only imagine the amount of ammo/weapons stashed.

His agenda that most Christians are “environmentally challenged war mongers” is not in my Bible.

So, where did he get his Theology? It must be “nihilism.”

P. S.  He was referenced by the LGBT community for his support of Gay rights after a speech he gave August 13, 2012. I guess he hasn’t read Leviticus 18:22 “You shall not lie with a man as with a woman; it is an abomination.”
