Are we on the inside looking out or outside looking in?

Maxicat

Maxicat

This photo is the latest at our house. We have a bird feeder right outside of the window which is getting plenty of attention and not just from the birds.

Discovering the feeder through the big window for her (the cat) was like having her treats and Salmon and Crab Meat dinner all at once.

Of course the event becomes more exciting with the window opened. She sits and listens to the birds chirping; some are quite loud. She has yet to figure out why they are so close to her. My husband commented,

“When she starts tearing the screen to get to a bird, it will be time to shut the window.”

Spoilsport. Party pooper. Killjoy.

While I was trying to get a decent picture which was difficult due to the lighting outside, she sat perfectly still staring at the bird. After a good long while she turned around and peered at me as if to ask,

“Can I get that bird?” or “is it ok if I grab the little tweet and leave it on the doorstep?”

The cat has no idea there is a barrier between her and the bird. For all she knows all she has to do is jump on the ledge and treat herself to a fine feathered…..well, you get the idea.

Observing her in this position reminds me of many people.

Human nature in its selfish state is like a barrier to the abundance waiting us.

Our efforts to reach beyond to get what we want are useless without removing the fences of self-reliance and independent spirit.

More than ever our society is filled with individuals wandering aimlessly around in their self-created 40 year wilderness. They, like the cat have no idea they are visionless to the transparent glass in front of them.

It may take quite a few hits before they realize the bird is on the other side impossible to reach from where they stand.

So it is with the truth.

We would rather get beat up by a piece of glass we can’t see instead of walking around to the other side where vision is paramount and prosperity is real.

This modern day prevalence is hindering nations of lost souls from seeing Jesus. His name has become a bad word; or a source of indifference. And people wonder why it all looks like it is falling apart.

Jesus is the vision through the transparent glass.

Jesus is our bounty and plenty.

Jesus is the way out of any wilderness; self-created or otherwise.

Whether you are inside looking out or outside looking in, it doesn’t matter.

Jesus is the way, the truth and the life.

And that is crystal clear.

There is No War on My Cat

Reading the news lately the shock of discovering there is a war on our “furry felines” of course routed my attention immediately.

The following article http://news.yahoo.com/staggering-stats-cats-kill-billions-animals-162839117.html gives statistics involving the hunting/killing of birds and mammals by our ever-loving feline friends.

At least we are not New Zealand who recently posted a ban on cats!

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jan/22/new-zealand-cat-lovers-campaign

An environmentalist, Gareth Morgan in New Zealand decided cats are killing native birds. In an effort to rid New Zealander’s from their prize kitties he suggested;Maxicat 011

  1. Euthanizing them is not necessary but an option
  2. Neuter them and do not replace them when they die
  3. Keep all cats indoors
  4. Make registration mandatory

What? Who is this guy? He should be flogged and hung out to dry.

Seems he has managed to dip out of sight after his declaration of “natural born killers” on the loose. New Zealand is one of the largest cat owner countries in the world.70% of the cat owners there disagree with his absurd and foolheaded assertion. He is fortunate at this point he doesn’t live anywhere near me.

So now this has spread to the United States where our precious pets of the feline nature are blamed for killing billions of animals a year. Had my Maxicat not “killed” for her food the first year of her life because she was feral, she wouldn’t be with me today.

A study done showed most cats who are pets kill between 4-18 birds a year and between 8 and 21 small animals a year. Out of 84 million owned cats, the majority are given the option to go outdoors to perform their so-called dastardly deeds upon the helpless targets of attacks. Enter at this point; what about the dogs who kill cats?

The majority of “bird killing cats” are feral. So why are they picking on our pets?

In my neighborhood alone are many feral felines running around. These wild kitties are homeless and in need of love so they struggle to survive on their own.

Last spring I wrote a blog about 2 Mockingbirds who graced a tree in our front yard with a nest. We lived here first but try explaining that to a mean, noisy Mockingbird who decided he ruled this roost. Stepping outside on the front porch was a dangerous move for any human and especially Maxi.

“Daddy Mockingbird” attempted over and over to swoop down and peck us on our heads to inform us we were not wanted. As a “father bird” he was instinctively doing what father’s do; protecting his eggs from the undesirables of the world.

Waking up on a warm spring morning, I made my coffee and peered out the back door looking for the cat. Only Maxi wasn’t present.  But she had definitely been there. My guess was the “mom and daddy Mockingbird’s” tried pecking her on the head a little too close and well, let’s just say she got the best of them.

If you want to get rid of mice, rats or moles get a cat. Maxi has quite a resume of taking care of those varmints around here.

A final note made in the study found that removing cats from the outdoors might have a negative impact on the ecosystem. Also noted was cats are a checkpoint for preserving certain species of birds and mammals from other prey.

So…..STOP PICKING ON THEM!

Born a Cat, Always a Cat

It’s hard to believe such a sweet, innocent feline as you see in her picture may not be so sweet and innocent after all.

Maximus Decimus Meridius
Better known as Maxicat

Yes, she is the family pet.

Yes, she allows us to live in her house.

Yes, she is still quite spunky for her age.

Proverbs 12:10 “Good people take care of their animals, but wicked people are cruel to theirs.”

The routine here at our house begins at 5am. Not me, my husband.
Like the “farmer” that he is, he gets up at the crack of dawn as if to go and feed the imaginary cows and chickens.

I can’t imagine getting up at such an indecent hour; much less function.
However, his ritual includes unloading the dishwasher if needed, (I know, I think I will keep him) and making a delicious pot of Java.

As he drinks a few cups of coffee, he indulges in the latest news to wake up before getting ready for work.

Only the morning of Tuesday, August 13th began far from his traditional protocol.

Believing the cat wasn’t quite up to par from her allergy issue was a joke.   I guess when it comes to feeding the family she was going to perform her duties.

I must interject here that my husband and the cat are on “tolerant” terms with each other. The love lost between the two is lost. As long as he fills in where I don’t, she is happy.

Finding out her extravaganza when he came home from work later that afternoon went something like this.

He gets up, makes the coffee and walks into the den to watch the news only to discover behind the couch was a headless, legless bird. The remaining corpse was surrounded by feathers spread out on the carpet; and one wing was, well lets’ just say it wasn’t all there.

As he turned toward the back door he noticed the cat sprawled out, hanging
over the end of the blue chair staring at him with those big, green beautiful eyes of hers.
She gave him a gaze of “aren’t you glad I brought breakfast?”

Proud of her achievements, he had some not so nice words for her and she began whining for her morning tuna.
Not sure he gave her any, but began the tedious
and disgusting task of cleaning up the nasty mess.

Placing this ordeal in perspective, she had to have gone to rather a great amount of effort to bring the “dead corpse” in the house. The back mesh screen is not one she enjoys going through but will if she wants in bad enough. She must have wanted us to celebrate her awesome catch of the day.

Reading up on cats and their behavior, I will remind you of the reasons cats hunt and bring the dead carcasses to their owners.

  1. Cats are showing their appreciation for all you do.
  2. Cats believe we are stupid and don’t know how to hunt so they show us how.

We have yet to figure out what her reasons are for the many presents she has brought us over the years, but whatever they are my husband says,

“She is just doing what cats do.” (His obvious dissatisfaction with her attempt to decorate the den with a dead bird at 5 am wasn’t the time for her to do what she does.)

Just as he said, cats do what cats do. God created her to hunt and feed her family.

Born in the wild she is notably talented in this field sport especially as small and aged as she is now.

Instinctively she knows her calling on earth. She didn’t have to ask God what to do with her life; she just knew.

Wouldn’t it be nice if it were that easy for us humans? Be born and hunt. Be born and sing. Be born and preach. Be born and be the next President?

No, we have the opportunity to get to know the Creator of the Universe, one on one to find out what he would have us do. Quite the honor and privilege don’t you think?

One more note.

I hesitated to ask my husband if he knew where the birds head and legs were. He responded,

“Why don’t you look under the couch?”

The Cat’s Claws

Chilean Mockingbird (Mimus thenca)

Chilean Mockingbird (Mimus thenca) (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

She finally did it. This morning I woke up to two dead mockingbirds in the back yard. Not 1, but 2. Most likely the two that have “mocked” our cat for weeks and they must have gotten too close….

Swooping up and down over the cat for sleeping in her own yard, these birds had become annoying.  She patiently waited for the moment of revenge and got it.

Whenever we walked outside, these birds let us know we were not welcomed. I kept yelling at them repeatedly informing them they were in my yard not theirs!

Maxi is 10 years old, but evidently quite spry for her age. These two birds should have known better than to continue their assault upon her. In the end she revealed who was boss.

The Killer Cat

Like some people I know, Mockingbirds mock. As I have written in past posts, in case you haven’t figured it out I don’t like them. Being the animal lover that I am, these fowl are just that; fowl……

My confession here lies I was not sorry she used her “hunting skills” on two such adversaries. Had it been another species of birds I would have scolded her. Not that she would have understood or retracted her proud authority of ageless accomplishments.

Another confession and I hope many of you would follow along here, I can think of people I would like to sick my cat on. The stage of “bullying” or society “caste system” is out of control. Unlike her, I can’t go around attacking the enemies of our jungle by swatting them with my claws, pulling out their feathers and leaving them for dead on the door step. Maybe I should let her do that.

Anyway, this is where I have to change my attitude about enemies. You know the Bible tells us to “love our enemies.”  Those mockers, betrayers and backstabbing gossipers whose lives are so empty they get their “kicks” by fueling the fires of low self esteem in others they are threatened by.

Proverbs 11:13 “A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy man keeps a secret.”

So, if you think about it, how can you consider them opponents, traitors or slanderers?

People who bully or “kick you when you are already down” are their own worst enemies. These insolent pests are fighting battles within they can’t win. Besides making fools of themselves, slanderers, etc. are slowly falling off a cliff they created on their own. Deep inside their plagued hearts is a willingness to hit the other cheek as often as possible unaware the ground beneath the cliff is their demise waiting to happen.

The outer covering of the tormentor is thin and unstable. Waiting for a fight, the words “turn the other cheek” and walk away disturbs that inner frustration and anger. It is not what they want.  Fighting is their means of gaining strength and power or so they believe.  The enemy of keeping our mouths shut triggers a force of willpower they long to possess.

Innocent?

Proverbs 10:8 “The wise in heart accept commands, but a chattering fool comes to ruin.”

Silence can be golden when used properly.

Silence can be the tool to reach a hardened heart waiting to be softened.

Silence represents that which is unleashed self control and love.

Silence gives God time and space to accomplish what humans can’t.

In other words, keep your mouth shut and allow the Holy Spirit to do the talking for you.

Proverbs 14: 3 “A fool’s mouth lashes out with pride, but the lips of the wise protect them.”
