The Flip Side of Youth

YES, that is what I said. I do not like getting older. Yet, I have no desire to regress.  Being here and now is the way it is.

Even my nurse expressed her opinion of this everyday occurrence, “There ain’t nothing fun about getting older.”

My gracious heart thanks God I made it this far. However it would have been nice if someone who use to be as old as I am now before I got here would have shared the toils of aging with me like:

1. AARP won’t leave you alone. They clutter your mailbox with  letter after letter about life insurance, doctor visits and burial plots.

2. You have so many pill bottles you use them as a decoration.

3. Aches and pains show up in areas I didn’t know I had.

4. I use to think people as old as I am were ancient. 95 looks better every day.

5. Senior Moments begin happening as soon as you end your mid life crisis.

6. I walk into a room and forget why I walked in there.

7. Age 55 in some stores consider you to be a  Senior citizen. You may get a small discount but you feel like a dinosaur.

8. Wearing glasses becomes a full time job.

9. Parts of the body seem to have moved. or fallen. or slid somewhere.

10. Getting up off the floor requires help.

11. The bathroom becomes your best friend.

12. You fill out surveys and it takes forever to find your age group.

13. You and your pet nap together in the afternoon.

14. Local retirement communities send you flyers inviting you to live there.

15. Your friends post pictures of their grandchildren on facebook.

16. You wake up cranky and wonder why it never goes away.

17. Your joints make creaking noises when you move.

18. You forget when you have a memory lapse.

19. Bending over you get stuck.

20. Your favorite words are, “what’d you say? huh? I can’t hear you?”

Proverbs 16:31 “Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained by living a godly life.

I wonder if you still get that crown of glory if you color your gray?

  1. Hi Kathy as usual God challenged me with this message, I have cared for the aged in a Nursing home and my Mum is 92, there is a Translation error and we know this because I have meet a lot of grey haired people who are not godly, some are even in jail, so what is the correct Translation ..

Proverbs 16:31The hoary head is a crown of glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness.K.J.V

In other words it is only considered to show goodness if we are righteous and if this is so it also confirms that it is a sign of Godly wisdom not so much the grey hair it can be dyed but age, we can also have Godly wisdom at any age when we ask for it and believe we have received it. The aged have life wisdom too, although it can be in error if they are not believers because they view things in a differant way then Christians.

Have you ever talked to a teenager about their pimples or someone who has Pmt or perhaps a young man with Prostrate problems… hey their not laughing but if you want to have a good laugh about your achs and pains Cathy, I will join you and add a few but I had mine when I was young too.

Well we have looked at all the negative sides of aging and believe me my Mum has told me all about them for many years and for a while I was very fearful about getting old but then God showed me how much He valued His aged Children and the wonderful blessings it has ( see link ) Do you know the Scriptures tell us we are to stand up when an elderly person walks into a room and we are to also respect their Godly wisdom. I call older men Sir and appreciate greatly the advice of my elderly Godly friends.

    Christian Love Anne.

    • Anne, my parents are in their 80’s; dad will be 86 in March. His father lived to be 94. I had an aunt who died 2 years ago who was 96. My family lives long.

When I was working I supervised over 50 retired volunteers. Some were wonderful Christians and others, well they acted worse than 5 year olds. There were times I just couldn’t believe how some of them acted. It was as if they hadn’t grown up.

Some took me under their wing like a daughter and it was great. My parents are wonderful people and I am sure my dad will laugh when he reads my post. He has a great sense of humor for a man who is a walking miracle and has been through so much in the last 2 years.

My grandmother, God rest her soul lived to be 93 after spending her last 6 years in a nursing home with Alheizmers’. I would visit her and watched her life slip away day by day. She was a Godly woman who lived a very hard life but loved her family unconditionally. I miss her. Spending so much time with her in the nursing home I became acquainted with others who were living out their days some not knowing who they were or remembering anything. It was a class with out being in the classroom.

My hope is for me, that I can age laughing, and joyful as my parents have hopefully to bring that laughter to others. Jesus wants us to know him not just as the Lord and Savior that he is, but his funny sides. I have seen these in him and he wants the world to see it also. That is why I think he has given me the words I write as humorous; in fact I am confident that is what he wants me to do.

      Blessings!

      • Cathy, sadly I had a very big supply of jokes that were not edifying, blond and Irish jokes, jokes that put husbands and wives down or disrespectful jokes about people in Authority and children being disrespectful to Adults, jokes about what God tells us is evil and jokes that laugh at the elderly, some of my jokes were very funny and not rude but God told me my talking was foolish and showed me why, yes I was rebuked by a Christian man but He also showed me that my jokes hurt others.

I do not laugh at others suffering any more, sorry but I have asked some very Godly aged and also some that are not Christians and they all said these types of jokes are disrespectful to them and they feel hurt that people are making fun of them and their misfortune… yes we can Laugh at ourselves but not others, Sometimes people will say what you want to hear, they may even laugh but those negative seeds have been planted. When I say something I mean it and when I share God’s Truth it is impartial , God does not like foolish talk and to me making fun of anyone is foolish.

Just because a joke is funny does not make it a good joke.

Feel free to delete these comments Cathy, I will not be offended and will always think highly of you and Love you in the Lord, I just don’t like this type of joking but I do believe God gave us the gift of laughing and humour, to be used wisely.

        Christian Love Anne

      • Dear Anne, this post was about myself. I too actually never made fun of those who others did. Maybe that was because I was so short I was always made fun of so I learned at a young age how that felt. My dad read it and loved it. Our 23 year old daughter responded if you see it.

My brother continually picked on me, made fun of me for no reason; and so did his friends. I had what I thought were friends who betrayed me in front of others and they all stood there laughing. She has never apologized. There are countless times and I use to get hurt by them. I don’t anymore because I have seen God doesn’t want us to be offended. In some ways as much as they hurt, I am strengthened now to be able to resist the offense. Not that in any way do I recommend that behavior.

My post was not to offend and I do believe that if we can learn to laugh at ourselves, we learn how not to be offended at least that is what God has taught me.

As always Anne, I appreciate your comments and revel in your love for God and how it shows. You are reaching many and my prayer is that God blesses you over and over….

I am constantly amazed at your posts…how or where do you find all those pictures?

      • Hi my dear Cathy, in no way did I think you deliberately wanted to offend anyone, you have a heart of Love. Wow it amazes me how much we have in common I will leave you a link of my early years. Like you I was discriminated against and this is one reason why I stand up for those going through the same thing and once again now because I’m disabled and 60 no one wants me, I tried to get a job and even volunteer but was shown the door, I’m not a Paraplegic or a 100 but that was how I was treated, I was even lied to by a Christian Organization.

Cathy I know you were laughing at yourself not others, I also never meant to hurt anyone, my humour like yours has brought joy to many, last night I felt so sad that I had hurt you but as always I felt I had to make a stand against what I see today happening to the Elderly, there is less and less respect for them but in God’s eyes as my Power point shows they have great value but today being young is what is important even Joyce Meyer has facelifts but then says we must accept who we are.

I’m 60, I’m passionate, demonstrative, loyal, caring, faithful, Dyslectic, I can’t drive, I have lines and a mole, sagy breasts, dyed grey hair and extra kilos and I’m over the top about most things including me and I Love my friend Cathy and am proud of her. I didn’t know she was short because to me she is 10 feet tall, but anyway being short is cute, that is why we like little furry friends but to be very honest I’m not as passionate about Big bears, but I like them at a distance. A good thing about blogs is we can’t see where our head or feet start or ends or what’s in between, just as well or like Jane Jetson I would have to get a morning mask… but for my whole body.

Take care my TALL friend – Christian Love Annie

      • Anne, I just read your story of the early years. I can’t believe all you have had to endure and yet you weathered storms most of us would not have survived. You have also come out way on the other side bringing hope through your writing and showing the world how awesome God is.

Don’t worry I was not offended. Offense is something I have and am still learning how to deal with mostly because of so much ridicule and from my ex-husband. It the blogging world we have to learn to not get offended because there are so many differing opinions; the best way is to lay them at the Cross of Jesus for him to deal with. And I do understand where you are coming from in fact it reminded me of a young boy in school many years ago.

I was in about the 5th grade and there was one boy who had diabetes. It was hardly a health problem then but he was always made fun of until one day when his sugar became so unbalanced he sat in his chair in the dining room all by himself and almost ended up in a sugar coma. I felt so sorry for him. The school nurse had been called in and they took him to the hospital. He was fine, but I felt like kids were so mean to him and it was wrong.

Anne I am so proud of you; how far you have come with God is truly remarkable after experiencing so much hardship and pain in your life. Just so you know there is not one ounce of a slow learner in your writing….you are gifted.

  2. “…6. I walk into a room and forget why I walked in there…”

A new scientific study has shown that walking though doorways causes a person to forget. Thus, do not walk through a doorway to get into a room. Use a window or maybe use a blindfold or possibly even walk backwards.

Hopefully this will help you…and just so you know, Danica Patrick is about 5’1″ tall. (She looks shorter.)

  3. Hahaha, it makes me want to write about my quarter life crisis.

But let’s see, at age 23, almost 24…all of the numbers that ALREADY apply to me:

    3. — Since getting into a full time schedule with working and school around the clock, I lose time to exercise. When I do, I want to keel over the next day. I remember over the summer going hiking on mountains I used to hike once or twice a week (for FUN) and I pretty much couldn’t move for 24 hours afterward!!

    6. — I forget things all the time, maybe because my brain already has wayyy too much going on.

    8. –Contacts since 14, glasses since 11 😉

    10. — When I’m at work I usually have to get low on the floor to block aisles (making everything look nice and orderly) and dig around searching for cigarettes and baby food to sell the masses. I’ve noticed when I stand up, my knees want to buckle. It’s crazy.

    13. –Sometimes my roommate’s pet chihuahua and I nap in the afternoons after morning classes and before night time class!

    15. — My friends like to post pictures of their children on facebook. Some friends that are as young as me already have 7 and 8 year olds.

    16. — Cranky should be my middle name during the school week.

So, yeah, don’t feel too bad mom. ^.~

  4. My favorite one is number 9… I am not 55 yet, but I can’t believe I am nearly there, and I can relate to some parts of this post. I like your style. It is entertaining!
