Spell-check? Who needs it?

Posted on

Do you rely on “Spell-check?”

Does it work for you?

Spell-check is great if you don’t know how to spell, but its’ grammar dept. could use some tweaking.

Not sure what Spell-check thinks but I have entered certain Bible verses that it tells me are “fragments; revise.”

How does it know that? Who wrote that Bible verse?
Was it Paul? Didn’t he use Spell-Check? Wasn’t Paul highly educated?

If Spell-check thinks the Bible was grammatically incorrect then where does that leave writers like Emily Bronte and Shakespeare?

One fairer than my love?” is a fragment written by Shakespeare. He either didn’t use Spell-check or he missed some English classes.

It is a real annoyance when Spell-check doesn’t understand the word you want to use in a sentence. For instance when the word sounds the same as another word but has a different meaning. Like “no” and “know.”

And of course it is quite distressing when Spell-check continues over and over underlining words with the ugly green line reminding   you there   are too   many   spaces between   the     words.

Typically, Spell-check shows up when I am in a hurry, don’t want the advice it offers or it will ignore me. After all it isn’t human. Is it? I am not hurting it’s feelings if I don’t use it am I? Sounds like a robot built in to my laptop.

The other trouble with Spell-check is that while I am writing about this blog post, it continues to spell-check this document!  Trying to get a word in, much less a full sentence before it yells at me to “revise, ignore once or ignore all” is aggravating and frustrating.

Having to stop and click on the little “ABC” at the top every time I write another sentence takes more time, manual labor and battery usage.

Spell-check never apologizes even when it won’t let you finish your sentence. It jumps in there before you know what to say as if it knows better what you should write. Who does it think it is? Moses?

Oh yeah right. Moses didn’t have to worry about Spell-check showing up on his stone tablets. Plus I doubt he got anything grammatically wrong or misspelled any words with God standing beside him.

It is kind of enjoyable when you click the ABC button and up comes this:

“The spelling and grammar check is complete.”

Does that mean I get an A?

The Apostle Paul wrote many books in the New Testament and while imprisoned.  You could say he used his incarceration wisely.

Imagine the Apostle sitting behind an antique, rustic desk in a broken down chair in his prison cell while guards keep watch.

He holds in his hand a reed brush or a sharp knife.  He dips the reed or knife in ink made from a mixture of charcoal, water, lampblack and grounded gum. If he wanted color he used mineral powder mixed with liquid.

Most likely Paul used sheets of Papyrus to write the written word and letters to the Ephesians, Colossians and Philemon.

Taking into account the tedious task of writing, one would need the patience of Job. The fortitude and perseverance in general terms of writing manuscripts would have been difficult.

But…writing the Holy Spirit inspired word of God sheds a whole new meaning on “pen and ink.”

Did Paul have any idea of the enormity of his job?

Did Paul or Moses have any idea their words whether transcribed on tablets or papyrus would thousands of years later become the Bible; a book that has sold more copies than any other in history?

Did these men of God know the words they wrote would last throughout all generations?

I marvel at the awesomeness of God and his clever ways of preserving his Word. Most manuscripts written 2000 years ago would have been lost, ruined or never found.

From beginning to end, God has outwitted everyone with his perfect genius. Literally speaking in the beginning was the word…..

It remains his word in languages from all over the world, in hardback books, audio’s and online.

Only these translations had the option to use Spell-check.

  1. Fine article~good thoughts and wonderment.

  2. I find myself getting irritated if i use spell check with bible verses. it seems that spell check is for modern use, not godly use, not god’s words. thankfully, i have always been pretty good at spelling, for normal use and don’t use it often, but if i go to the level of education that more intelligent people have, as yourself, i would need more than a spell check, i would need a dictionary, which i do keep handy right here on my toolbar LOL

    • Terry, I use all kinds of aids to write with. I am always looking up synonyms to words because I love words. I, like you was always a good speller. My husband has a Masters Degree and can’t spell worth a hoot. He is always asking me how to spell words for him.

My intentions to write or do whatever have only happened because of what God has enabled me to do. I didn’t want to blog. In fact I really didn’t want to blog so much I avoided it. But God kept nudging me to do it. Now I know why.

  3. “…The Bible is the only book whose author is always present when you read it…”

Great quote and good job again. I love spell-check and ignore the grammar side of it.

  4. In some cases spell check is a blessing, and in others..it’s just plain gets on your nerves! I hate when I post an article directly online here and everytime I update, I have click okay first because it’s trying to tell me I have things misspelled and what not.

  5. Great post, Cathy! Love the thoughts on the bible — God is Good!
    God Bless you & yours!

  6. Naphtali,spell- check to me is another distraction from God’s message. How could spell-check know what my heart is truly saying. Because I communicate with the Holy Spirit. Until spell check meets the Holy Spirit, then it is just a distraction.

The world is filled with rules of grammar, which apply differently depending on where you are. But they shouldn’t define who we are. Let’s say for example you are poor in grammar to man’s standards, but strong in your relationship with God? Which is better? God is to me. If God says a job is for you then no grammar-filled resume can keep it from you. So it is a distraction by man to discriminate. If you are reading posts and you get caught up in the spelling errors and the grammar errors, then you won’t get the true message.

I love this. God always brings a such a humor and love through His messages to you! I love you and wish you a day filled with God smiling and and God throw in a few chuckles too.

  7. I’m a terrible speller with a capital T! I wish spell checks were programmed to read minds and new (!) what I really was saying. I think I need one so others have some idea what in the world I was saying. But maybe we’d all be better off with creativ-speling. :)

    • I have trouble spelling certain words too..I always get mixed up on the ei and ie stuff…you know, like conceive, deceive, perceive, those kinds of words…people who write books aren’t always the best spellers! Everyone always thinks if you write a book, you must be really perfect at spelling and grammar…it is the editors at the publishing companies we have to thank for the awesome grammar and spelling! LOL

  8. I’m in agreement with Butch…Fine writing.
