Deaf Ears or “Selective Hearing?”

Posted on

As we age hearing can be limited especially since we have blown our eardrums for decades with loud music, roaring motorcycles and noisy neighbors.

Technology has provided hearing aids or options to improve hearing loss. I can only imagine the number of “baby boomers” like myself who will flood doctor’s offices for the latest products. Oh. We won’t be able to afford it now! Forget that! 21 new taxes.

Anyway, the thought does cross my mind how much hearing loss is actually hearing loss.

How often do people play the “selective hearing” game? Ughh……

You know. It is convenient to listen when it is what you want to hear. Otherwise, just turn a deaf ear and pretend you are deaf.

To be honest I do know a few people who utilize this scam, or privilege. I guess it depends on who is doing the talking as to how it should be labeled.
Let’s see:

The husband turns his wife’s chatter off….deaf or selective hearing?

Proverbs 27: 15-16 “A quarrelsome wife is like the dripping of a leaky roof in a rainstorm; restraining her is like restraining the wind or grasping oil with the hand.”

Naaaaa……..no one would do that.

The teenage son turns a deaf ear while his mother is screaming at him to turn the music down.

Proverbs 22:6 “Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.”

Or we walk down the street and use “selective hearing” as the blind man sings for money.

Proverbs 21:13 “Whoever shuts their ears to the cry of the poor will also cry out and not be answered.”

Our society is full of deaf ears. Masters of screening the political pundits, the opposite side or aisle and many who simply turn the TV off. Doesn’t matter the words, we don’t care.

Lies are so prominent why listen?

Maybe another way of putting it is those who don’t want to hear what they don’t want to hear, simply ignore it. That’s right. Just ignore it. Maybe it will go away.

The more something goes away the more we don’t have to deal with it. Act as if it isn’t there. The more it goes away, the less it bothers us. The less it bothers us, the more we don’t believe it.

You can talk yourself into not believing what you don’t want to hear.

What you don’t want to hear becomes a way of life.

You way of life becomes a lie which starts a ripple effect of more lies to cover up the first lie.

The issue with lying over and over is the liar begins to forget which lie he told when. That is unless you have a staff, videos and an administrative effort to keep you up to date on your lies so you don’t repeat them or get confused.

My question then is “selective hearing” based on lies?

If you continually use this process you eliminate certain pieces of information you most likely don’t want but keep the ones you want.

So if you keep the information that makes you happy, giving you want you want even if it is a lie then “selective hearing” is a lie.

But if you are forced to keep the information you don’t want to hear and it isn’t a lie, many will make it a lie and throw it across the aisle changing the subject.

So much for the truth.

The easiest way to discredit a message is to discredit the messenger. If done successfully, the message eventually becomes a lie.

  2. I always love the quotes in your images. That was quite an upset on the court the other day wasn’t it?

  3. Excellent, excellent post Cathy…
